Real-time weather data and images by MMS and SMS

The Real-Time WeatherWatch (RTWW) gives you up-to-the-hour weather conditions, such as wind speed and direction, barometric pressure, temperature, wind chill factor, humidity, rainfall (some stations) and sea conditions (water temperature, swell height, swell direction and cloud cover).

All historical data can be viewed in tabular format. Graphical trends (2 hours, 1 day, 3 days and 5 days) of these parameters are also provided.

In addition to this information, current video clips of about 5 seconds duration are available so that you can see the prevailing weather conditions from your PC, PDA or cellphone.

Tide Tables for the current year for Hermanus, Knysna, Langebaan, Struis Bay and Table Bay are provided with indication of mean tide displacements.

Real-Time WeatherWatch currently has weather stations at Big Bay (Bloubergstrand), Cape Agulhas, Kenilworth, Muizenberg and Struis Bay, with Kenilworth being the system development station. Further RTWW stations are planned for the future.

There is now a great new way for surfers, kitesurfers, boardsailors, fishermen, divers, hang-gliders and other sports enthusiasts to get real-time weather data and images from remote locations around the Western Cape.

The Real-Time WeatherWatch service will be available to mobile cellphone subscribers via Vodacom's MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) for image and data and later by SMS (Short Message Service) for data only.

The cost will be R5,00 per MMS. When the data-only service is available this will cost R3,00 per SMS.

How does the Service Work?

SMS the name of the station (choose either the long or short name in the table below) to :

You will receive an MMS containing :

a weather image (compressed digital photograph) showing the weather and sea conditions (latest daytime image)
weather data :
-  Wind Speed (with trend)
-  Wind Direction (with trend)
-  Barometric Pressure (with trend)
-  Air Temperature (with trend)
-  Humidity

The latest weather data will be available 24 hours a day.

Terms and Conditions of Service Usage

The service is presently only available to Vodacom subscribers.
Customers require an MMS capable phone to be able to receive weather images. Customers must ensure that they have the correct MMS settings set up on their cellphones and that they have been enabled on the network to use MMS.
The service is not available internationally.

RTWW Roll-out

It is envisaged to roll-out a network of RTWW weather stations between Langebaan on the Cape West Coast to Plettenberg Bay on the Cape South Coast. Eventually the network is planned to be extended to the Eastern Cape Province and the kwaZulu-Natal coast.
