Introduction to Gigabit Ethernet
C²I² Systems’s German network technology partner, SysKonnect (SK), has developed a high-performance, dual-channel PCI Gigabit Ethernet Network Interface Card (NIC).
C²I² Systems are investigating the possibility of developing PMC and CCPMC versions of SK’s PCI Gigabit Ethernet NIC. These versions would be ideally suited to embedded platforms. With all versions being derived from the same hardware design, they feature a wide range of compatible and qualified software drivers, including those for popular commercial operating systems such as various derivatives of Unix and Windows NT, as well as for real-time operating systems such as VxWorks and LynxOS.
PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) is a standard for connecting peripherals to a personal computer. Technically, PCI is not a bus, but a bridge or mezzanine. It includes buffers to decouple the CPU from relatively slow peripherals and allow them to operate asynchronously.
PMC (PCI Mezzanine Card) is a low-profile mezzanine card for desktop computers and other computer systems, with logical and electrical layers based on the PCI specification.
CCPMC refers to the conduction-cooled version of PMC. Conduction-cooling is a method of cooling active and passive components on a Printed Circuit Board (PCB) by direct heat conduction from an area of higher temperature to an area of lower temperature. Host carrier cards provide the thermal interface for the conduction-cooled PMC (CCPMC) adapter by means of thermal ribs which conduct heat away from the PMC adapter.
The PMC and CCPMC formfactors are ideally suited to embedded platforms; PMC where conventional-cooling will be sufficient and CCPMC where system design constraints indicate conduction-cooling and other ruggedisation.
For users, Gigabit Ethernet holds a great advantage in terms of the extremely fast response times of the network. For managers of commercial networks, Gigabit bandwidth on the LAN backbone also provides the infrastructure to meet the needs of added users and new applications that usually contribute to traffic congestion on the backbone. Gigabit Ethernet is therefore the strategic choice for high-speed, high-bandwidth networking.
